Cannabidiol, along with more than 80 other cannabinoids, originates from the Cannabis sativa plant, better known as hemp. Hemp is considered one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world and has been used for medicinal and naturopathic purposes for thousands of years. Hemp is defined as an annual herbaceous perennial that, under favourable soil conditions, can reach a height of up to five metres. Originally native to Central Asia, the remarkable hemp plant has been spreading around the globe for thousands of years — as so often, with human assistance — meaning its natural range can no longer be precisely determined. Today, hemp is found almost worldwide in temperate to tropical zones, both cultivated and in wild-growing form.

Let it be said right from the outset that CBD is the harmless, non-psychoactive sister of the notorious "marijuana." Anyone consuming CBD oil will therefore never feel high. "What a shame," some may think — but the outstanding qualities of this oil deserve, we feel, equal attention. So let us take a closer look at this remarkable substance.

CBD oil, produced from the cannabidiol of the female plant, contains vitamins essential to the human organism such as B1 and E, as well as minerals including potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, sodium, phosphorus and zinc. CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system. As already indicated, unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — the other primary and best-known cannabinoid of the hemp plant — it produces no psychoactive effect.

However, CBD does influence the production of the body's own endocannabinoids, which act like neurotransmitters: they transmit signals throughout the body to maintain balance between its various functions. Although both CBD and THC interact with the endocannabinoid system via the CB1 and CB2 receptors, their effects differ considerably.

The full range of CBD's effects has not yet been sufficiently researched, as we are dealing here with an extraordinarily broad spectrum. It is believed, however, that CBD interacts particularly with the CB2 receptors and encourages the body to produce more endocannabinoids. This leads to a reduction in feelings of anxiety and stress, as well as pain and inflammation. Anecdotal reports suggest that taking CBD oil may alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy or provide relief from epileptic conditions. Anti-inflammatory properties, a reduction of dementia-related symptoms, and relief from psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia have also been observed.

Those who use CBD oil may also benefit from more restful sleep. Users report increased inner calm, relaxation of the nerves and a soothing effect on the mind. CBD oil is also said to work wonders in combating free radicals, bacteria and oxidative stress. Consumers dealing with pain and skin issues report positive experiences with CBD oil. Joint conditions, migraines, menstrual pain, fibromyalgia, neurodermatitis and acne are said to be relieved to a notable degree. The ingredient vitamin E in particular may positively influence the course of skin conditions. In some cases, the skin's sebum content may also be reduced to improve the overall complexion.

Now let us turn to the application of this precious plant oil. It should be noted that finding the optimal dose is an individual process. Every person — as a unity of body, mind and spirit — responds differently to CBD. Starting with a small daily dose of ten to twenty milligrams of CBD, one can observe the body's response entirely risk-free, increasing the amount as needed until the desired effect is achieved. Most people consume between ten and eighty milligrams of CBD oil per day.

The ideal dose is influenced by various factors including weight, diet, metabolism, sleep patterns, stress levels and genetics. Some individuals are also more sensitive to it than others. CBD oil is generally very well tolerated, as it is a natural plant compound that is harmless even in high doses. The most common, though minor, side effects of CBD are mild drowsiness, loss of appetite, a dry mouth, diarrhoea or minimal weight loss. A major advantage is that CBD oil causes neither psychological nor physical dependency.
