Butea superba (Kwao Krua Deng) – The Flame of the Forest

The Flame of the Forest (Kwao Krua Deng, or Butea superba) is one of the rarest plants in the world. The Latin term "superba" stands for "magnificent/mighty" and refers to the plant's spectacular flowers, which possess a regal appearance with a vivid orange colouration. Growing as a liana, this remarkable plant reaches heights of up to 12 metres. Its pinnate leaves consist of leaflets, and the flower clusters appear in a racemose form. The tree develops seed pods of up to 15 centimetres in length, which produce oval, flattened seeds.

The natural range of this exotic plant extends from Sri Lanka through Laos to the Philippines, and across the Indian subcontinent as far as West Bengal. On Mauritius it is considered a neophyte — a plant that has successfully established itself through human influence. They have valued it as a medicinal plant for generations, with local interest focused above all on the plant's root. In Asian countries such as Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam, the dried and powdered root is particularly sought after as a remedy for potency. The fact that Butea superba contains a diverse range of constituents — including glycosides, flavonoids, phytohormones and plant sterols — supports the assumption that it acts similarly to common PDE-5 inhibitors.
