Peganum harmala is rich source of a variety of reversible mono-amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs): harmaline, harmane, harmine, and one seretonin reuptake inhibitor, tetrahydroharmine. MAO is an enzyme that, amongst other things, degrades many psychedelics once they enter the body. As a result of this, Syrian rue can both enhance and deeply prolong the effects of many psychedelics.
